Our Story

About funsiQuin

funsiQuin is a  locally run, family business established by our parents Pepe Collar and Leonor Álvarez.

When they married they started living in funsiQuin which was Pepe’s family home. Dad was a miner in the coal mines and mum dedicated herself to housework, bringing up the children and caring for the farm. They worked tirelessly to improve their lives and build a better future for their five children and opened the village bar that later became a restaurant and then a bed & breakfast.

A new stage

Following in our father’s foots steps we, their children, have taken over the running of this family business with of course the continued support of our parents. With the support of our brothers (Jose, Avi and Pablo),we, the two daughters, are leading this new stage in the life of this family business. Nieves is now the manager of the restaurant and Azu is the manager of the hostel and the Camper Area.

Rural Tourism

At the end of the 1980’s professors from the University of Oviedo in Asturias, began to arrive to the area to study the brown bear. They partnered with the Brown Bear Foundation to study its habitat as it was in danger of extinction.

They came to our house to inquire about the bears, as our elder brother had a flock of goats and he had met bears several times in the mountains.

As they needed a place to stay and be able to observe and study the bears, our parents offered them room, food and shower. Following the publication of their studies in magazines such as Rural Tourism and the sunday of the Newspaper “El País”, travellers from all over Spain began to arrive at our establishment each summer.

We were the pioneers in the valley in offering facilities and a warm welcome to the tourists and so was born what today we call our Rural Tourism project, which includes the hostel, restaurant and Camper Area.
